Soccer is a player’s game. It is the one sport that coaches give the players all the tools (skills), teach the concepts (strategies) then let the players go to work. It is like a carpenter with a tool belt. The players ability to create or play is based on the array of tools (techniques) they have in their belt.
Skill is the most important aspect of the game to coach. This will give confidence and build self esteem in all players. Skill will allow the players to integrate strategy into their game. It allows all players to be functional. Coaches need to keep all practices fun positive and in motion at all times. Coaches must understanding that the process and method of correction is extremely important. Keeping a positive demeanor and encouraging correction philosophy is imperative to keeping the kids motivated to train. This keeps them open to trying new things and attempting all skills. It is ok to make a mistake if they at least try the new skill. It is the coach’s job to evaluate if the proper technique is being used.
It is important to note as a coach, you must know the 4 aspects of the game to teach.
Technical
Dribbling, cuts and turns, moves to get behind defenders, attacking one v one, trapping, first touch, passing, heading, tackling, defending one v one, first touch, chipping, longballs, and goalkeeping, juggling, volleying, half-volleying, .
Tactical
Decisions! The strategy of the game, systems of play, formation, game knowledge, field awareness, group attacking, group defending, concepts of attacking concepts of defending, transition to defense, marking/tracking, possession, direct play, man to man, zone, set plays(def and attacking)
Physical
Size, speed, strength, agility, endurance, anaerobic training, aerobic training, plyometrics, etc.
Psychological
Communication, attitude, work ethic, mental toughness, attitude during adversity, commitment, discipline, attentional skills, concentration, desire
These are philosophies that we as coaches instill in our attendance that we expect in our practice attitude, that we expect players to do away from practice. These are philosophies on how to work hard all the time, how to change or manage the ebb and flow of a game and how to overcome a deficit or a poorly called(referee) game. That we attend to what is happening now not dwelling on the past calls or lack of calls. Never winning just focus on executing, simple decisions, and our game plan etc.
